From what I've read, the tiny tires on huge lift is intentional to show off how much work and effort and money you've put into a pointless lift. its supposed to show off the suspension work, which of course is pointless because you are only showing off that you've done nothing that a suspension life should do: Increase articulation, bigger tire fitment, better load carrying, more comfort.

The closest thing I could compare it to is stance nation. Ruination for the sake of a "style"

this is what they call "Hawaiian Style" tall 6",8" and even 12"lifts and wide 33" tires.

I assume the tall lift is for good breakover angles and the wide tires are for buoyancy for driving on sand.

but I think it's more about style than anything else.

Dude, I live in eastern NC. There are varying degrees of squat. Some are a couple of inches dropped in the back, some are slammed in the back, lifted in the front. All are about the stupidest thing to come down the pike in quite some time, topped only perhaps by 'stance' and 'hellaflush'. I'm all for mods that improve performance, and can even get behind those that are only for looks and at best are performance neutral, but those that actively make a car more dangerous?

Kinja'd!!! Jumbojeepman > Party-vi
03/15/2014 at 12:28

Kinja'd!!!1

At a certain size tire, you no longer have to worry about deflating your tires. For instance, I had tires from 31x10.50 to 35x12.50 on my former F-150. With the 31x10.50's to traverse deep sand easily (Cape Hatteras) I had to both let some air out and shift into 4wd. With the 35x12.50's I just cruise across the same sand in 2wd without letting any air out at all.

I think part of the reason for the massive lift (particularly in Hawaii, but it's more common now) is people don't want to cut their fenders anymore to make tires fit. So they have to lift the truck more to get the body up off the tires. I say particularly in Hawaii because if they drive on the beach they may want to keep their body out of salt spay, too.

It's funny because I haven't noticed these types of trucks in my many travels to Hawaii (I go several times each year for work). I think the explanation is likely where I go and work, mostly Maui. I bet this is seen on Oahu more than anywhere else. I could be wrong though. Regardless, it's interesting to look at. I'd never do it, but I can appreciate others' unique tastes and styles.

You can fit 33s on a stock xterra with a heat gun used on the mudflaps. Cutting fenders doesnt explain stanced 4x4 tires. Bad taste and a general disregard for tire wear does.

Maybe 33x12.50's but not 33x15.50's I bet. The majority of trucks I see like this aren't Xterra's BTW. They are Toyotas and full size trucks (which are already lifted to much from the factory these days.) When you turn the mega-wide tires, they require lotsa room in the fender area up front.

Actually, there is stricter regulations on O'ahu, called RECON. Every island has safety checks each year to make sure your tires are within your fenders (or fender flares). (they check more than just tires in the safety check). All of these trucks are illegal, but people get around that because over here, there's a lot of who you know. It's hard to believe you didn't see any of these types of trucks on Maui. Although it does depend on where you drive, if you drive on the road at all, then you will easily see 5 of them or more each time you set out. There aren't any legal places to wheel over here because most of the land is privately owned. Driving on the beach is illegal, VERY illegal, so it's not a beach setup for sand. (Driving on the beach can crush turtle eggs burrowed under the sand and other native species habitats). It's just style that is very unique to Hawai'i. Even though they look a lot like the CenCal style, it's a whole different attitude. I hope having some info from someone who lives on Maui has helped. I tried to inform as much as possible without getting too off topic.
